Hair oil—without the greasy finish.
Use the right amount, in the right place, at the right time.
The three-part rule
Hair usually looks oily when too much product remains on the surface, especially near the roots. This does not mean you cannot enjoy a nourishing oil ritual. It means the application should match your hair type and your goal.
Choose your application method
Deep treatment
Apply before shampooing. Massage into the scalp and work through the lengths. Leave on for 2–4 hours or overnight, then wash thoroughly. This is where you can use a more generous amount.
Finishing oil
After styling, warm 1–3 drops between your palms and lightly skim over dry ends. Keep the oil away from the roots unless you are about to wash your hair.
Your palms are the measuring tool.
Dispense the oil into one palm, rub both palms together and let your hands distribute a thin, even veil. Applying from your hands gives you more control than pouring oil directly onto the hair.
How much should you use?
| Hair characteristic | Finishing application | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Fine or easily weighed down | Dry ends only | 1 drop |
| Medium density | Mid-lengths and ends | 2 drops |
| Thick, coarse or very dry | Mid-lengths and ends | 2–3 drops |
| Pre-shampoo treatment | Scalp and lengths | Enough for light, even coverage |
These are starting points, not strict rules. Hair length, density, porosity and dryness all affect the ideal amount.
If your strands are especially delicate, read the CRISAN guide to using hair oil on fine hair.
A non-greasy finishing routine
- Begin with completely dry or nearly dry hair so you can see how the oil changes the finish.
- Place one drop in your palm. Add more only after evaluating the first application.
- Rub your palms and fingers together until they have a very thin sheen.
- Start at the driest ends, then use what remains on your hands over the mid-lengths.
- Wait a few minutes before deciding whether your hair needs another drop.
Five mistakes that create greasiness
Pouring onto the roots
For leave-in use, place the oil in your hands first and focus on the ends.
Adding too much at once
You can always add another drop, but removing excess usually requires washing.
Confusing two methods
A wash-out scalp treatment uses more oil than a leave-in finishing application.
Ignoring hair density
Fine hair and dense, coarse hair rarely need the same finishing amount.
Incomplete shampooing
After a deep treatment, cleanse the scalp and lengths thoroughly and rinse well.
Layering blindly
Heavy creams, butters and oil together may overwhelm hair. Observe how your products interact.
